Common Questions

What does it cost?#

The button is free with no limit on use. Pro is a per-domain subscription that removes the ads and the PrintFriendly credit, and unlocks two extra settings. Current prices are on the Print Button page.

Can I buy a lifetime license?#

No. It is a subscription, because the service keeps running on our side for as long as your readers keep using it.

How do I cancel a subscription?#

Sign in, open your subscriptions, and cancel the one you want. You keep what you have already paid for until the end of the period, and the page names the date.

Cancel here even if you paid through PayPal. If you paid by card through PayPal you have no PayPal account to sign in to, so their subscriptions page cannot show you anything. We handle it on our side for every PayPal customer, however it was funded.

Canceling leaves your account in place. Deleting the account is a separate, larger thing, and it cancels any subscription with it.

Where are my invoices, and how do I get my VAT number on them?#

Invoices are under Billing History in your account. Add your company name, address and VAT ID on your company details and they will appear on invoices from then on.

If you need details added to an invoice that has already been issued, ask us.

Which sites use it?#

Recipe sites, news publishers, knitting and sewing pattern sites, documentation, schools and universities, churches, and a lot of government and legal publishing. If you need named references for a procurement process, ask us and we will put some together.

Does one license cover my subdomains?#

Yes, up to three. A license for a domain covers that domain and up to three of its subdomains. It does not cover a different domain, including a host's temporary staging address, which needs a development domain instead. See staging and development sites.

Will it work on an intranet or a site that needs a login?#

On Pro, yes; on the free button, no. See pages behind a login or paywall.

Does it work on non-English sites?#

Yes, including right-to-left languages. The words on the button itself ship in English and are plain text you can edit, which is covered on the button page. If your site is translated on the fly by a plugin or a browser, what we capture is whatever the page actually contained when your reader clicked.

What data do you collect about my readers?#

On the free button your reader is taken to printfriendly.com and we fetch the page to build the printable version. On Pro the article is read in their own browser and sent to us to be formatted; we still fetch the images from your server unless Encode images is on. Either way we need the address of the page, so the printout can cite where it came from, and we never ask your readers to sign in or create an account.

The privacy policy is the authoritative statement, including how long anything is kept. If you need something citable for a school district, a works council or a procurement review, write to us and say what the form asks for.

Is it usable under GDPR?#

Yes, and Pro is what most organizations with a formal review end up on, because it removes the ads. Ask us for the current documentation rather than relying on this page, which is not a legal statement.

Will it slow my site down?#

The script loads in the background and does nothing until someone clicks, so it never slows your site down. The button is a handful of elements with no image to fetch.

I want to make PDFs from my own backend, not from a button#

That is the REST API. It takes a URL or an HTML string and returns a PDF, and it is priced and documented separately.
